THE BASIC EXAMINATION is a test of the things a beginner is expected to know. It can be taken either in the candidate's own apiary or at the County Apiary at Brackenhurst College. Although it can be taken at any time it is recommended that this examination is taken at the start of the season when there are fewer bees in the hive.

Once the BASIC Examination has been passed beekeepers can then progress to the more formal written/practical examinations.

Assessment takes the form of a series of modular examinations on all aspects of beekeeping. The examinations take place on nationally agreed dates throughout the year. Each candidate studies on their own although there is an excellent correspondence course organised by the BBKA. Application to take the examination is through the Education Officer of the Notts. Beekeepers' Association.

Modules currently available are:
  1. Bee Diseases
  2. Microscopy
  3. Bee Anatomy
  4. Apiary Management
